The legs were stuffed after the first few rounds of the body were knit, then started stuffing the body when I got to the color change. He should feel firm but kinda squishy, like an overripe fruit (BA-DUM CHING!)

Many thanks to my Festivus giftee, Garrison, for getting the gauge I'd neglected to measure before sending Percy off to him.

Directions:

Leg (Make 2):
In CC2, CO 6 st. Truth, justice, and the American Way, Mom, apple pie, and boy scouts, and any other opinions bedamned. Then she morphed into a teenage trollop with the unfortunate habit of fighting the Good Guys whenever they suggested she take a little responsibility along with those massive powers, or, alternatively, randomly turning evil with a little provocation.

But in the end, just as All-Star Superman had done for Supes, Wednesday Comics showed me that there could potentially be more to poor, maligned Kara Zor-El than short skirts and a bad party girl attitude. And that something more, specifically? Weapons grade quantities of cute. It certainly wasn't hurt by being written by the current Powergirl team, but as a take on the character I had never seen before, it really changed my mind about her.

This is all a long story to explain why this happened tonight:

This is closer to the DC Animated Universe version, but considering my limited funds this year, it was the easiest way to do it.

Naturally, a Super Pet will be making an appearance:

So that concludes our lesson in "never say never", because there's always some unbearable cute out there to trip you up!

It's been a minute since I updated, so I guess it's a good thing that I'm working on a new pattern.

It's a hanging fruit basket for the kitchen, and it's almost done. Like so:

I'd seen these pieces hanging next to each other in an endcap and thought how nifty they'd look in a necklace. The original intent was just to put it on Etsy, but now I kinda want to keep it all for my greedy little self. It's a lot more striking than I'd thought it would be, and I personally don't have a lot of impact jewelry.

Ultimately, tho, I'd probably never wear it, so as much as it pains me, it'll probably go up for sale. You see, I've been struggling with how to make the radish earrings required for any good Luna Lovegood costume. I could've sculpted them out of clay, but that's not exactly one of my strong suits, my search for charms that look like radishes had been fruitless, and any handmade earrings for sale on Ebay were running upwards of $20. I'm already going to have to spend a pretty penny on a skirt and tie, so 20-30 dollars on a pair of earrings I'm going to wear once a year isn't really an option.

Then, while in Joann's, I stumbled upon a set of spherical red buttons, and thought to myself that they could easily pass for a radish. I found some leaf shaped beads (in the process, I also found better red beads for my purposes), and it was as simple as that:

Close-up!

All you really need is two big red beads (1/2"-3/4"), four leaf beads (I used two each of different sizes), two eyepins (you could totally use headpins if you wanted, I had eyepins on hand, and I think it makes the bottom look more like the squiggly radish tail), and french hooks or whatever post you prefer. Put the red bead on the pin, followed by the leaves, make eyes, and attach to the hook.

I'm really pleased with these. Now I just need to get hooks, and then work on the Butterbeer necklace - I picked up corks for that today. They're soaking, and should be ready for stringing up later this week.

Huzzah!

Trinity scarf pattern, at long last!

I knit this scarf YEARS ago, sold it in a yard sale, and had all but forgotten it until I stumbled across the book I had originally found the stitch pattern in. The primary reason I hadn't put it up yet was because I didn't have a decent graphic of the color charts, so I finally got off my duff and made some:

Link to the <strike>Past</strike> full size.

Ok, here goes. This is my first time writing a pattern, so be gentle.

Pacman scarf

Materials:
Red Heart Soft (100% acrylic)
[MC] Black, 2 skeins
[CC1] Yellow, 1 skein
[CC2] Red, blue, pink, or orange (or whatever color you want your ghostie to be), 1 skein
[CC3] White, 1 skein or less

One 12" circular needle in size to fit gauge

Crochet hook for fringe

Gauge:
18 sts / 26 rows over 4 inches

Pattern Notes:
I knit this in the round using Fair Isle. It can very easily be translated to flat knitting with intarsia. It can also be knitted with the Pacman motif on both sides by placing a marker at 25 stitches and repeating the directions from the marker as if from the beginning of the round.

Directions:
Using MC, cast on 50 sts. Join round, being careful not to twist sts. K ten rounds.

Round 11-27: K 4 sts in MC. Begin Pacman chart using Fair Isle technique and CC1.

Round 28-35: K all sts in MC.

Round 36-39: K 10 sts in MC. Begin pellet chart using CC1.

Repeat rounds 28-39 twenty-nine times, or until scarf is about 4.5 inches shorter than desired length.

K eight rounds in MC.

K five sts in MC. Begin ghost chart using CC2 and switching to CC3 or MC when necessary.

K ten rounds in MC. BO.

Using crochet hook, hook fringe through open ends of scarf to close.

And that's more or less it. Your neck is now 8-bits warmer.

EDIT: Ms. Pacman chart now available! Please note that this chart is 19 rows long instead of 17, and adjust pattern accordingly.

I fell in love last night. The Who blanket was finished in a fervent weaving-in session last night, and delivered to it's intended recipient: the impending Melspawn.

And much squeeing was had by all.

In goodies expansion news, several Hancock Fabrics are going out of business around town, which, with everything at 90% off, is good news for me:

This is not including the $80 worth of DPNs and size 17 and up straight needles that a friend picked up for me the other night. That's six yards of gorgeous red jacquard and half a yard of fish-scale sequin net, none of which I have a clue what to do with (tho I'm leaning towards a bodice for the jacquard). So I have no need to buy needles for a long, long time.

I got an invite to Ravelry the other day, which is fantastic. I'm already addicted. I think my favorite thing is the ability to queue - saving a to-do list of patterns. For example, this, which I think the Pi blanket may end up getting cannibalized for.

So that's it for now. I have yet another(!) Doctor Who project coming up, now that DragonCon is clearly on the way. A beret for Joseph Merrick? Girly dice bag from hell? A yarn pie?

You would be close with the last - it's the start of a blanket pattern I came up with based off of Elizabeth Zimmerman's Pi Shawl. I like the idea of knitting round things. And a round blanket would look very neat on a bed. Alas, I dove right into this one without thinking about color schemes, so it doesn't match my room. I'll probably have to do another one later that goes.

I'm knitting it out of kitchen cotton - maybe not the best choice, texture wise, but I'm planning to sew in a fleecy backing, and kitchen cotton always has the best colorways. I'm using coordinating variegated balls, so there will be stripes as it goes out towards the edge. Not really sure of the circumference right now - it's on 16" circs, but it's obviously outgrown them. I probably won't move up a length until the next increase round, however. For right now, tho, it doubles as a nifty carrying bag for my yarn and doodads!

Ok, so it's been a while. I'm an idiot and forgot my password, what can I say? So lets forget about that and get on with the WIPs! And they're especially geeky!

Firstly, what with OotP movie and Book 7 coming out this summer, we've got the obligatory Hogwarts sweater:

Closeup of the stripe:

I'm using the pattern from Hobbie's House of Wizard Wear using Cascade 220 - the only yarn I could find with an orange that was "bronzy" enough. So far it's going pretty well. I was stupid and didn't get the hanks wound into balls, tho, so this project won't be leaving the house any time soon. Tsk.

Next up, we've got a blanket based on the infamous Doctor Who scarf:

And of course, the main problem with any Doctor Who project, the ends:

There's a reason I don't plan to sell Who scarves...weaving all that in will be a bitch!

I'm also working on a swatch blanket, but that's in a lot of little pieces right now, so it's not being very photogenic. I'll have pictures once it actually is...

I'm not dead...

...just in dial-up hell, which makes it really hard to upload pictures to my host.

I've finished a few things, none of which I've gotten pictures of, but I did finish a hat this morning, and got a picture of that, so here you go:

There's a scarf and almost-finished wrist warmer to go with it. Once you get the lace pattern memorized, the rest of the scarf flies by pretty quickly. However, as it's knit in two pieces, I was a little concerned about the grafting at the neck.

As it turns out, it was the easiest part of the scarf. I just transferred both halves to one needle, alternating stitches from each, and then bound it all off, knitting two stitches together at a time. It's probably not the way the pattern called to graft it, but I haven't had to look at the pattern in about a week and a half, so I'm not terribly concerned.

In a more non-knitting direction, I found two dresses to put together for my girly Two-Face costume. It wasn't quite the direction I was originally planning for the costume (half goth-punk/half glam), but I actually kinda like this better. It's a bit closer to the Batman Forever concept, and I really did like that costume. And Tommy Lee Jones is fab, but that is neither here nor there...

The black dress is huge, probably a size 14 or 16, and had already been taken in by a few inches at the bust (which makes me wonder what on earth the person who owned it was shaped like), all of which would be problematic if I were actually planning to wear it. Fortunately, I'm just planning to hack it up, so the extra fabric makes things a bit easier.

Granted, a lot of the costume is gonna be in the accessories and other details, most of which I had planned out by the time I got to the checkout at Goodwill. Time will tell, tho.

The last thing, I picked up a sweater that I'm gonna recycle. For real this time. This sweater is about two sizes to big for me to ever actually wear, instantly stamping out any feelings of guilt at wasting a perfectly good sweater.

Which is a shame, because I actually really like the sweater, and would probably wear the hell out of it if it fit. It's 52% wool, 48% acrylic, and not quite as bright as the pictures, but still peppy. I'll probably get around to destroying it sometime next week - pictures forthcoming.

The hoodie what never ends

So I've been working on this hoodie from the Spring/Summer 04 issue of VK since...oh...November of 2004. Early this fall, not long after what ended up basically being a summer-long break from knitting, I finally finished all the pieces of the hoodie.

Let's have a look at it, shall we?

First of all, I just want to say that I love the colorway. The pattern was intended for Koigu, but in my usual, anti-yarn snob fashion, I did it in just a Red Heart Super Saver. However, the color, Monet, is quite possibly the best thing ever created in the history of making yarn. It's been discussed in Knitting, even, and that's a pretty yarn-snobby place.

Plus, it was a pretty simple pattern. Knit a back, knit one side the same length as the back, knit another side just like it, some easy sleeves, and finally a ridiculously easy hood. A monkey could do it.

So why, after almost a year and a half, don't I have a pretty, watercolory flavored hoodie to wear around this spring?

Well, depending on who you ask, it's because seaming/counting is hard. Also, finishing sucks, no matter how you look at it. I finished the hood. I finished one side seam. But somewhere, along that second seam, I messed up, and ended up with about two inches difference in the armpit.

How did I do it? I have no idea. I measured all the pieces together beforehand, several times. Both against each other, and with a measuring tape. Why haven't I gone back and tried to fix it? I don't know. Frustration, laziness, disenchantment with what was otherwise a ridiculously simple pattern, maybe all of the above. Will I eventually get around to fixing it? Yes, undoubtedly, but most likely not before at least one, if not both, of my other current projects are finished. I'm just that annoyed with it.

Anyway, I think that brings us up to speed with what I'm working on. Yay.

I've been working on two main projects lately: The Falling leaves scarf from Vogue knitting Spring/Summer 05, and the Accidentally-On-Purpose vest from Stitch N Bitch Nation.

I'm working the scarf out of Lion Brand Wool Ease in cranberry. It's the first yarn I ever bought, and I've tried to work it into a few different scarves since then. The first scarf was a lesson in overzealousness - it ended up a foot and a half by nine foot garter stitch monstrosity that was so heavy, it choked me whenever I tried to wear it. Hence the redo.

It's also the first lacework I've ever done successfully, and I think it's turning out pretty well...

(click image for a very large and very overexposed pattern detail)

It's about a foot and a half long right now - not bad for about a weeks-worth of bus rides to work and a few episodes of Gilmore Girls.

The vest is coming a little slower, mostly because it's stockinette - massively boring compared to lacy leaves.

I'm working this in Patons Brilliant, which is a really fun yarn, and surprisingly soft considering it's full of sparkly plastic bits. I'm almost at the point now where I start dropping stitches, so that's a little more exciting. And then...I get to do another 23 inches of stockinette for the back. Joy of joys.

Maybe tomorrow if I'm feeling inspired, I'll post about the hoodie that never ends. We'll see...

Well, here goes nothing...

Figured I'd jump on the bandwagon and fix myself a crafts blog.
